Who is Watching?

I have to admit I really don’t like reality TV shows. It often seems to be the farthest thing from reality, people playing to the camera with, clearly, planned and scripted scenarios. But worse than it’s fictitious nature is the, often, depraved behavior that is encouraged.

Why is it that this has become such a significant demand from the public. I understand from the production side it is incredible easy and cheap to produce. But what is the draw from the average consumer? And what is produced with such unnatural pressures?

The appeal is that one can be witness to and lay judgment on another’s life like a god. The results are distorted physical, emotional, and spiritual people on both sides of the screen, those who participate and those who consume.

But what happens when I redirect my attention from the manufactures scenarios on the screen to the reality of my life and it’s exposure to the witnesses of heaven and earth?

“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live”
‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭30:19‬ ‭NIV‬‬

This is not a pre-scripted event evoking salacious responses. This is real life. And in it God has set before us life and death and tasked the heavens and earth as witnesses against us. Then God calls us to choose life so that we and our children might live.

Do we live our lives as if all creation is watching?

Do we walk each day like our choices are literally life and death for us and our children?
